May December Romance Disparity Between the Sexes

May-December Romance

May-December Romance

When it comes to May December romances between the sexes, its clear in this particular space, that it is in fact a Mans World.

I say that without any umbrage towards the dudes of the world—it just seems to be the case, over-all.

Case in point, Robin Wright announces today (which is PR parlance for its been done-zo for weeks) that her engagement to actor Ben Foster is OVER.

Her reasoning, as has been publicly released—was bridging the gap between their 14-year age difference, and it was specific enough to note that the split was ‘her decision,’ hmmm.

This gave me the sads for a multitude of reasons.

For one, I was so pleased to hear of her new-found happiness over the summer after she spent all of her best looks years having to deal with Sean Penn’s alleged philandering and temper all the while, bearing his two children. Her ex has enjoyed countless relationships with women decades his Jr (allegedly during their marriage)—and it was nice to see her getting some well-deserved attention from a younger suitor. After all she is still an extremely beautiful woman.

And 2, far too often May December romances between Older Women and Younger Men often end in tears, with women bearing the brunt of the heartbreak. *This is my experience and view. Would love to hear if you disagree!

And finally, there was something a little too PR vetted in that mention of ‘her ending it’. Again, the idea that if that wasn’t CLEAR who dumped whom most would assume she was DUMPED due to her age, and possibly affect her career?

She has a prime role on Netflix’s hit House of Cards and my gut tells me that this mention of who cut ties 1st, was deliberate and negotiated well-beforehand. We know all too well, how difficult it is for actresses over 40 to land plum roles in Hollywood, and while I may be ‘reaching a tad’ this is what it reads like, to me.

In comparison to her announcement of ending her engagement comes the news this week that two male celebrities on their 3rd marriages respectively, marry women 20+ years their junior.

Again without a tinge of bitterness (ok, maybe a little) it’s significant, as the pendulum shift between the sexes is so vastly different.

Men, for the most part age better than women (from a natural stand point)—the old adage that wrinkles and silver hair on men are SEXY, has never wavered through the years. This week Marc Anthony married a woman 20 years his Jr. and Jeff Goldblum a woman 30 years his Jr. And there are myriad more examples of this phenom of older man/younger woman run rampant in our culture ad nauseaum.

Whereas in reverse, these relationships last rarely-to-never between an older woman and a younger man. Think Madonna and her failed marriage to a decade younger Guy Ritchie, and her subsequent fleet of romances with men barely older than her own daughter. Demi and Ashton, who (Ashton) incidentally left their marriage after cheating with a barely legal young woman, and ended up with a decades-younger-than-Demi, Mila Kunis.

The examples are endless.

There seems to be a running theme or a built-in time frame between this OW/YM dynamic on when they generally begin, and when they seem to end. A younger man in his early 20’s may find an older woman in her 30’s or early 40’s extremely alluring, but that seems to dissipate once a man reaches his mid 30s and said woman nears her late 40’s early 50’s. It’s then that generally men start to date younger, if they never did before. *I stress generally as no one despises sweeping clap-trap statements more than moi.

The Way They Were: Ashton and Demi Casper Smart and Jennifer Lopez, Brahim Zaibat and Madonna.

The rare exception(s) to the rule is the 13-year-age difference between actor Hugh Jackman and his wife Deborra-Lee, but unless you live under Kim Kardashians gargantuan bionic greased-booty–you’ve had to of heard of the extensive BEARD rumors?!

Hugh Jackman and wife Deborra-Lee

So really, that leaves us with the remaining romantic May December romance for the ages—pun intended. The incredible LOVE STORY between actor Max Caulfield (Grease 2 fame) and his wife, actress Juliet Mils—18 years his senior. They have been happily married since 1980.

He has no reason to need a beard as his career has never really taken off— and he has no reason to keep up appearances for the sake of his career. It saddens me that I even have to mention it, but it’s also been a point of contention. I see the *LOVE* between them in spades.

May December True Love for the 'Ages'

May December True Love for the ‘Ages’

But what do we know? Hollywood is rife with smoke and mirrors, PR posturing and illusion run amok.

Beyond the Brangelina’s of the world, I find ‘Hollywood couples’ highly underwhelming yawnathons and look to my real life examples and draw from there.

Here’s to AGELESS Love in all its forms, whatever they may be.

Loving You,

Ellen Page Officially Comes Out

I‘ve been a fan of actress Ellen Page’s work ever since she appeared in the Indie hit Juno. She’s always had a great mix of intelligence, humor, depth and humility in every role she has taken on, and while I haven’t met her, she seems as down to earth as they come. She also gets extra brownie points for being Canadian, natch!

Earlier tonight, at the Human Rights Campaign Time to Thrive Conference being held in Las Vegas, Ellen Page came out as a gay woman. She was visibly shaken with nerves and understandably so. The following speech displays her ‘oh so human’ plight, and it was one that moved me beyond words.

I’m truly happy for her, and for anyone she may inspire to authentically walk in their truth, whatever that may be.

My Definitions of Love & Romance…

Love is...Magic

Love is…Magic

We live in an era where bumper sticker quote sentiments litter our Facebook feeds like an ongoing ticker tape of empowerment narratives and drive-thru therapy.

But long before we liked, pinned, or retweeted these pearls of digiterati, before books, film & pop culture shaped how we navigated our love lives, advice came from our elders and our peers—and within that, sayings that have endured the test of time.

Every Man has heard the adage: “Why Buy the Cow, When You Can Get the Milk for Free? (*To which I just want to respond to in a droning  ‘Mooooooo’ every time I hear it…)

And I don’t know a Woman who hasn’t heard from her own mother… “A Woman should be with a Man who Loves her More…

As a woman I can only respond to the latter, and while it might be controversial, I do think there is a lot to be said for a man who is head over heels in love with his woman. This is not something that is actually quantitative, as in…he loves her 60% and she loves him 40%…but rather a man who puts his love on a pedestal…loves his woman even more than he loves himself, like the above Frida Kahlo quote…he looks at her as though she were absolute  ♥ ♥ MAGIC ♥ ♥…

At the end of the day…Male or Female…Everyone deserves to feel utterly adored if only for moments or for a lifetime. Both can be just as fulfilling.

♪ ‘Love…Exciting and New’

Ahhhh the 80’s TV hit The Love Boat…New Love is incredible, but it has to evolve into something much deeper if it’s going to stand the test of time. After the initial haze of butterflies and sweet nothings, a relationship becomes something that has to be constantly worked on, treasured, and fought for…even if the love itself is effortless.

That being said, as a Cancer female I am a true hopeless romantic.  Below are a couple of visuals on what is the apogee in Romance to me…

Dancing with your partner anytime…anywhere…Verona Italy; the site of Romeo & Juliet…the love poetry of Pablo Neruda and His & Her Couple Tattoos.

…and here are some of my favorite quotes on true love and soul mates…

For my readers old & new…single or attached…Happy Valentines Day to you…Love in all its many permutations is really the most important thing that you can have in your life.

Not money, not things, not accomplishments…

Ad Titans Sid Lee, Absolut Vodka & Icona Pop all collab together for an Xtravaganza House Ball!

I absolutely adore when an ad house collaborates with multiple streams to create something so unique it *begs* to be noticed.

In this case, creative titans Sid Lee collaborated with Absolut Vodka and ‘It Girl’ group Icona Pop for a fusion cocktail of premium Absolut Vodka and a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand called Absolut Tune. The sparkly new concoction; which tastes a little like champagne with a dash of vodka, is obvs not champagne at all–but it looks absolutely yummylicious!

The packaging and ornate glass bottle have a polish and sophistication that will be a huge hit with party-goers and house warming gifters alike, especially over thanksgiving weekend and X-mas. Again, the allure here is that for $31.95, it looks like a champagne bottle with an authentic wire cork, and you’ll probably want to save the bottle itself as a keepsake place to keep your spare change.

Absolut Tune

Absolut Tune

But I digress. I’m not here to ‘flog poetic’ about the product (unless I’m getting PAIDwhich I’m not)

The real genius here is in the marketing campaign!

The viral video which focuses on a modern New York House Ball is loosely based on the iconic documentary Paris is Burning–a chronicle of the 80’s Harlem drag and house ball scene that came out in 1990.  It was in this film that the audience was introduced to a profusion of terminology like ‘Realness,’Giving Face,’ Reading and a highly stylized dance called Voguing.

The fact that the “All Night” video is a narrative of the house ball scene, a music video and very subtle advertorial in one is where the magic lies.  I also thoroughly enjoyed seeing José Gutiérrez known as Father Jose (AKA Father Xtravaganza) featured prominently in this video.

No Way Jose!!!

No Way Jose!!!

Gutiérrez is a famed choreographer and a stalwart of the house ball scene, who at a young age had a brief cameo in Paris is Burning.

Gutiérrez also gained international acclaim when Madonna hand-picked him to be a principal dancer on her Blond Ambition tour and featured him in her video for “Vogue“.

To sum up; this is one of the best ads I’ve seen in recent memory. It’s authenticity and attention to detail makes the branding potential for Absolute Tune limitless, with ‘house party’ events already being planned with the likes of DJ’s Samantha Ronson and Solange Knowles in New York and LA.

Look out for Absolute Tune this fall.

I’ll drink to that!

Happy Birthday to Us Mom…

My Beautiful Mother

My Beautiful Mother

In a couple of hours it will be the first birthday without my precious mother calling me to sing me ‘Happy Birthday’ in her lovely, gentle lilt. I’m not sure if my blog is a portal to the heavens, but in the interest of all things being *interconnected*, soul contracts, and sheer GRATITUDE, I want to THANK my late mother for giving birth to me, and tomorrow will be celebrated with her in mind.

Love you mamma.

Happy Birthday to US. xo

A Passage for EVERYONE…

I read this passage about a month ago, and beyond the goose bumps that appeared all over my arms, *every* part of this passage spoke to me–resonating deep within. Whoever you are, whatever stage you are at in your journey in this life…I believe this passage is a great road map to live life by. I truly hope you enjoy it as I have.

N.B. It is unclear who has written this so I am not attributing any author to it, and in some ways it seems fitting as it would fall in line with the true meaning of the text that this author would remain anonymous.

You will sometimes meet someone you believe is a soul mate; you feel the connection on many levels, perhaps instantly. And as you get to know each other more, you begin to feel the connection deepen and you feel that you must have an arrangement with this person that predated this lifetime.

Do not assume, however, that this soul connection necessarily means that you are meant to be happily together for this lifetime. It may be that you are meant to be friends and allies, helping each other out. It may be that you are going to help each other in ways that even involve conflict and separation, but with an end result that is beneficial to you. It may be that you are going to learn some lesson from each other and then go your separate ways.

What you need to do with all relationships, including those that have that instant and deep connection, is let be. You need to allow all of life, including close relationships, flow and evolve. You need to let people be who they are, not what you want them to be. And above all, you must not try to control, push and prod, manipulate and orchestrate relationships.

Have the courage and the heart, the centeredness, to follow your own path, to be who you are and love being who you are, no matter what. Shine out and show us who you are, so that people who are looking for someone exactly like you can find you. Do not allow setbacks or even major betrayals to dampen your shine and your being.

In life’s journey you will encounter much, narrow paths blocked by avalanches, forks in the road shrouded in fog, deep valleys of darkness and bright sunny days in meadows of golden poppies. It is all a part of life. And as you walk your path, other people will join you for a time: a dear friend, a lover, a spouse, children and parents. And then they may go away

Entrances & Exits…

Here’s a poignant thought for the day. It’s what I’m experiencing now watching my mother in her last days in this life. Love is all that is REAL in this world and all the matters. If we get it ‘right’ it will definitely hurt like hell when its time to let go, but it also gives us a strength we never thought possible.

Love is all you need…xoxo
